BULK Space is a Detroit-based arts organization committed to enriching the city's cultural landscape by providing inclusive platforms for artists, particularly those from marginalized communities. Our mission is to dismantle barriers in the arts by offering workshops, residencies, publications, public programs, exhibitions, and access to our Media Lab. We are dedicated to fostering equitable access to opportunities and resources, enabling underrepresented artists to thrive.

Co-Director

Jes Allie

is an independent curator and arts organizer. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Curatorial Practice from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2024. With over ten years of experience in the art and culture, she has had the opportunity to work with a number of national and international arts organizations and institutions such as the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA),  Red Bull Arts, Contemporary&, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), SPACES, Independent Curators International, Lincoln Center and ApexArt. Her main focus is exploring how the arts continue to act as a means of cultural preservation among change.

Jova Lynne

is a working artist and arts administrator. Lynne received a Master of Fine Arts in Photography at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2017, and has exhibited in a variety of galleries and public museums including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. She is a grantee from various foundations which have supported her work in media and social practice-based projects in Kingston, Jamaica and Berlin, Germany in addition to the United States. Jova Lynne’s work is part of the permanent collections of Harvard Art Museums, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Cranbrook Art Museum amongst others. Lynne has most recently served as the Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at Tyler School of Art and Architecture and is the Artistic Director at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.

Co-Director

Clare Gatto

is an artist, educator, and arts organizer living and working in Detroit, MI.  They have attended artist residencies Vermont Studio Center, ACRE, Velferden Scene in Norway, and Sim in Iceland. Gatto is a recipient of Culture Sources 2023 Creators of Culture and Flourish Fund. In February of 2024 they were artists in residence at The Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred.

Co-Director

Meg Kelley

is an interdisciplinary artist with training in both photography and sculptural media. Through image and object making, their work’s main exploration lies in the relationship between the digital space and the human experience. What is fluid and what must stay behind.

Kelley earned a BFA from University of Cincinnati (DAAP) in 2013, and went on to receive an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2017. Now residing in their hometown Chicago, they continue their art and administrative work as a co-director and co-founder of Bulk Space.

Projection Mapping Workshop

With Merel Noorlander
June 12, 2024 6PM - 8:30PM

This Program focuses on the basics of projection mapping as a form of non-linear storytelling, creating playgrounds. We will be looking at the possibilities, pros, unforeseen obstacles, and other experiments in public and inner spaces with the confidence that the visuals and (non-lineair) stories will reach whoever they need to belong to. All freely accessible in public space, where we no longer rely upon a “gallery space or art studio” as the horizon of all constitutive meaning but instead as a fluid possibility for thought and practice with exchange and connection.

This will take place at BULK Space Media Lab, offering each participant the space for experimentation with their own footage. No experience is required for this workshop

Merel Noorlander

Merel Noorlander (they/them) is an artist, curator and educator navigating between Salt Lake City, Detroit and Amsterdam (The Netherlands), who grew up in the Red-Light District, amongst a self-chosen queer family, and captain of their boat. They investigate expanded forms of media that focus on collective empowerment within sex tech, community-based media design and participatory processes, in strong collaboration with LGBTQIA+ communities. They are interested in how storytelling can function as a guide, a tool — an instrument for pleasure, a playground for imagination right at each person’s doorstep. They currently lead a Design Research through Video & Projection Mapping at the Multi-Disciplinary Design Division (MDD), University of Utah.

The First Mirror is a Night Sky is the result of Aiko's creative efforts while in residency with Bulk Space in 2021. The book follows a young person's perspective as they navigate structures and tensions without yet having the language or context to do so. Utilizing multiple mediums including prose, visual work and poetry, the book offers a rhythmic and layered narrative.
